Laser Tattoo Removal

The Q-Switched Alexandrite Laser is very effective at removing tattoos. It delivers a very high power but very short pulses of laser light, which pass through the skin and break up the particles of tattoo pigment. These are then removed by the body and the lymphatic system. Depending on the colour of the tattoo you will need at least 10 treatments to achieve a 95% clearance.

The first few treatments are painful (as sore as having your skin tattooed) but the pain will decrease after a few treatments as there is less pigment to absorb the laser energy. A topical anaesthetic cream called Emla may be applied between 1 and 4 hours before treatment to reduce the pain. (Nursing Sister to inject local anaesthetic).

Mild bleeding and blistering may occur after the treatment. The area is covered with antibiotic ointment and a light dressing for a few days. Fading of the tattoo is usually visible about 2 weeks after treatment.

Treatments required: Multiple (one per month) until clear.
