Fraxel and Fractional Laser ResurfacingFractional Laser Resurfacing is the latest laser technology which can deliver the similar results to that of ablative resurfacing, without the discomfort and inconvenience of a lengthy healing period. Another advantage of Fractional Laser Resurfacing is that the treatment is done in the Doctors’ rooms with a topical anaesthetic cream and does not require a General Anaesthetic! The actual treatment takes approximately 30 minutes. The procedure has an excellent safety profile, with minor blistering very uncommon and scarring virtually unknown Fractional Laser Resurfacing treats a small "fraction" of the skin, leaving intact, undamaged skin around each treated area to act as a barrier and a reservoir for rapid healing. Fractional Laser Resurfacing is done with a Fraxel Laser – the laser passes through the dry outer layer of skin, and wounds the underlying collagen. Nearby undamaged cells immediately mobilize to heal the wounded area. No visible wound is created, so no wound care is needed. The skin may appear ‘bronzed’ and red for a day or so but makeup can be applied immediately. The Fraxel Laser is FDA approved for the treatment of facial (periorbital) wrinkles, age spots, and sun spots, but it's expected to work well for almost any application for which traditional ablative resurfacing is effective, including acne scars, rosacea (including rosacea with breakouts), hyperpigmentation, and sun-damaged skin. The Fraxel Laser treats about 20% of the skin with each session. The number of treatments necessary will vary from patient to patient depending on how much collagen remodelling is needed but generally 3-5 treatments spaced over a 3-6 month period.
